CompTIA

Course overview

CompTIA (The Computing Technology Industry Association) is a global, not-for-profit organization that provides competency validation and certifications in IT. Since its inception in 1982, CompTIA has become one of the most recognized players in IT training and certification, with the goal of strengthening the IT industry’s skills, credibility, and career prospects.

CompTIA’s certifications are vendor-neutral, which means they are not tied to a specific technology provider. Instead, they focus on broad, practical skills that are in demand regardless of whether the user works with Microsoft, Cisco, Amazon, Linux or another platform. The certifications are divided into several levels – from basic to advanced level – and follow a natural progression for IT professionals.

Certification

CompTIA’s certifications are tested through computer-based multiple-choice exams, scenario-based assignments, and simulations. The tests are conducted at authorized test centers (e.g. Pearson VUE) or online via supervised testing platform. The certifications are usually valid for three years and can be renewed via new courses, work, or renewal exams (CE program – Continuing Education).

More about the course

The certification structure

CompTIA’s certifications are divided into the following levels:

1. Core – Basic IT skills

The Core certifications are designed to provide a broad and stable base in IT, security, and networking. They are suitable for both beginners and people who want to change careers.

    • CompTIA IT Fundamentals (ITF+)
An introduction to basic IT concepts, for those who want to understand the basics before moving on to a career in IT.
  • CompTIA A+
A highly established certification that focuses on computer hardware, troubleshooting, operating systems, networking, and support. A+ is often the starting point for help desk and support roles.
  • CompTIA Network+
A certification that focuses on network engineering, protocols, troubleshooting, infrastructure, and security at the network level.
  • CompTIA Security+
A basic but comprehensive certification in IT security. Covers risk management, encryption, threat management, incident response, and much more. Often a requirement in organizations with high security requirements.
  1. Infrastructure – Technical Specialization

This level focuses on system administration, cloud technology, and virtualization.

  • CompTIA Server+
For system administrators focused on server installation, configuration, and troubleshooting in data centers or cloud environments.
  • CompTIA Cloud+
Focuses on the implementation and management of cloud-based solutions and infrastructure in hybrid environments.
  • CompTIA Linux+
Covers basic and advanced management of Linux systems, including command line, scripting, and security configurations.

3. Cybersecurity – Advanced-level security

CompTIA offers a dedicated track for IT security that builds on Security+ and targets more advanced roles.

  • CompTIA CySA+ (Cybersecurity Analyst)
Focuses on proactive threat detection, incident response, and security analytics – often in a Security Operations Center (SOC) environment.
  • CompTIA PenTest+
Focused on ethical hacking and penetration testing – how to detect and exploit vulnerabilities in systems and applications.
  • CompTIA CASP+ (Advanced Security Practitioner)
An advanced certification for experienced security specialists. Covers architecture, policy design, incident management, and risk assessment at a strategic level.

4. Additional Tracks – Leadership and Project Management

CompTIA also offers certifications for roles that are not primarily technical, but where technical understanding is required.

  • CompTIA Project+
Focuses on project management in an IT context. Suitable for both project managers and technical roles working in project form.
  • CompTIA Data+ (launched in recent years)
Provides knowledge in data analysis, visualization and decision support – especially relevant in an era of data-driven decision-making.
