Course content

Managing the Test Activities

Explains how to define test management tasks based on the context of the project and how test activities are adapted to the current software lifecycle as well as different test levels and test types. Risk-based testing for prioritization and resource allocation is reviewed, with an emphasis on product risk management. We also go through how to choose a suitable testing strategy that is in line with the different conditions of the project.

Participants will learn the general steps to implement a standardized test process improvement initiative and how to develop a test improvement plan using test process improvement models such as TMMi and TPI Next.

The chapter concludes with how to use testing tools to make testing more effective, including good practices for introducing a tool, how to choose the right tool and how to benefit from it by collecting relevant metrics.

Managing the Product

The focus here is on how testing contributes to the product.

Participants learn how to define metrics and use them to monitor, control and report test progress and product quality status. Test estimation activities and techniques are explained. Defect management is described from a test management perspective, including what defect management looks like in different software lifecycles and how defect data can be used to improve processes.

Managing the Team

Addresses how to assess the competencies needed in a software testing team and how to define a development plan to strengthen these competencies. Also includes motivation of the team and key communication skills.
